The report, led by Judy Oakden, highlights how Thriving Southland’s approach has empowered farmers, fostered stronger ties with scientists, and encouraged the use of sustainable farming practices across the region.
Key findings include:
· Enhanced capability: 86% of respondents said Thriving Southland has helped build their ability to drive change.
· Improved connections: 89% reported better relationships with scientists and experts, turning Catchment Groups into hubs for shared learning.
· Meaningful change: From 2020 to 2024, the percentage of Catchment Group members using science to guide farm decisions increased from 14% to 83%.
The report highlights that Thriving Southland’s backbone support has created a foundation for sustainable progress. With more than 3,600 people attending 238 events this year, participation in Catchment Groups is rising, along with increased support from local stakeholders.
Thriving Southland Project Lead Richard Kyte is very pleased with the report findings. “This independent report validates that Thriving Southland is bringing real value through the support it provides; it is more than just a resource,” he says. “We are a catalyst that aims to empower Southland’s Catchment Groups with the tools, knowledge and support they need to take on local challenges and drive meaningful change.”
Thriving Southland is also strengthening local collaborations, supporting farmers in adapting to climate and water quality priorities, and building community resilience. The report notes that while substantial progress has been made, continued support is key to sustaining the impact of Thriving Southland’s work.
