Project Description
This is stage two of the On-Grass Winter Demonstration 2022 project. This stage will look to take the concept trial further by using treading resilient pastures, to look at broader applicability and adaptation across a range of intensive properties in Southland.
The learnings from stage one of the project will help guide and refine the plans for Spring 2022 sowings and 2023 wintering practices for five farms across the region.
The five farms will work with a project scientist to design how the trials will be conducted by establishing a recording protocol to document sowing, establishment, growth rates, initial grazing observations of the trial paddocks and post wintering pasture growth rates.
Objectives
Run five scientifically designed trials at five farms across Southland which will impartially assess the merits of an on-grass system utlising alternative pastures.
To undertake preliminary farm systems and financially modelling of the effects of a change in farming practices to on-grass wintering.
Current concepts of wintering are challenged in a non-threatening way
Outcomes
A farmer friendly report detailing the findings of the project along with five field days during Winter 2023 showing the effects of the trials.
A measurable percentage of Southland farmers will have confidence to make significant changes to their wintering practices that give environmental and perception benefits
