Otama Catchment Group

Catchment Group:

Project:

What is influencing our water quality?

Funding:

$1,840 Ex GST

Period:

Jan 23 to Mar 23

Project Description

Engage specialist speaker to collate and present water, soil and geology information relevant to the land managers and community in the Otama catchment.  This will provide the Catchment Group with a base knowledge of their catchment to help them identify their issues and potential pathways, so they can take their first steps to setting their direction as a Catchment Group and come up with possible actions. The presentation will take place during an evening event and will include a session facilitated by the Catchment Coordinator to help the group set their direction and initial actions.

Funding would also be earmarked for a small handout summarising the background research and key info for the Otama catchment, along with a video which could be shared with the community and future members of the Otama Catchment Group.

Objectives

  • Provide the Otama community with a specialist speaker to deliver science-based information. Help the community understand what influences the water quality in their catchment.

  • Gain an understanding around how water is moving through the Otama catchment.

  • Give this newly formed Catchment Group an understanding of the key physiographic landscape settings influencing their area.

  • Explore possible mitigation pathways that exist or could be considered as a Catchment Group

Outcomes

  • Farmers, land managers and community members will have a better understanding of soil, geology, water, and land-use interaction in the Otama catchment, and identify current and future issues, and possible mitigation pathways.

  • Farmers, land managers and community members will have confidence to make decisions around environmental improvement.

  • Farmers, land manager and community will have a greater understanding of how water moves through the catchment, including the influence of modified water courses.

  • Engagement of the wider community (brochure and video).
